Decorating Your Bulky A/C Unit

With summer just around the corner, your air conditioner will quickly become one of the most important features in your home. For many people living in apartments, that means relying on those window A/C units. While these units are essential for staying comfortable, they’re rarely the most attractive element in a room.
The good news is that your A/C unit doesn’t have to feel like an eyesore. With a few thoughtful design touches, you can turn the space around it into something intentional and visually interesting.
Turn the A/C Area Into a Styling Moment
One of the easiest ways to improve the look of your A/C unit is by decorating the area in front and around it. Those small souvenirs and knickknacks you’ve collected from past trips don’t have to stay hidden away in storage and can become part of the display around your A/C unit.
The space near the window naturally draws attention, making it a great place to showcase a few meaningful objects. Arranging these items around the unit helps it blend into the room rather than stand out as a purely functional appliance.
Create a Small Platform for Decor
If your window A/C unit doesn’t have a ledge or built-in frame below it, consider placing a small drink table, side table, or narrow console underneath. This simple addition creates a platform where you can layer decorative objects, books, or plants.
Not only does this give you a place to style the area, but it also helps visually anchor the A/C unit so it feels integrated into the room rather than floating awkwardly in the window.
Add Plants for a Natural Look
Plants are another great way to soften the look of an A/C unit. Positioning greenery nearby can help balance the mechanical feel of the appliance and bring a more natural element into the space.
If you’re considering real plants, make sure to choose varieties that can tolerate strong sunlight and occasional temperature fluctuations from the airflow. Succulents are often a good choice because they’re resilient, low-maintenance, and thrive in bright environments.
That said, it’s always important to research plant care beforehand. Some plants are sensitive to cold air or direct sunlight, and the airflow from an A/C unit can sometimes make certain plants difficult to maintain.
Why Faux Plants Can Work Even Better
I found these faux plants at IKEA’s as-is section for about $15 each. Even though they aren’t real, they still bring a natural texture and visual softness to the space while allowing air to easily reach the intake on the bottom of the air conditioner. The benefit is in how they interact with the A/C itself. When the air conditioner is running, the airflow moves through the leaves, causing them to gently sway, like grass blowing in the wind, maintaining the natural aesthetic. Alternatively, you can easily grow something like ivy on a small lattice to place in front of the A/C unit.
Simply Decorating Your A/C Unit to Make the Space Your Own
Transforming your A/C unit can cost anywhere between $0 to $100, but the end result makes the entire area feel more intentional. The best part is that the styling includes objects I already had and pieces that reflect my own personality.
You might not have the same monkey ornaments that I used in this setup—or maybe you do—but the goal isn’t to replicate the exact design. It’s about finding your inner decorator by using what you already love and finding simple ways to turn even the most functional parts of your home into something that feels uniquely yours.
